Our First Public House

Report for Investigation held on Monday 6th November 2006

Punch Hotel - Queen Victoria Square, Hull

The old Punch Hotel had been situated in Waterhouse Lane since the 1840s but was turned around to face St John's Street when rebuilt in 1895-96 now overlooking Victoria Square. It was possibly Hull's most elaborate pub designed by Smith, Bradrick and Lowther Co. It is a masterpiece of Terracotta and Burnantofts faience panels. Recognised as a listed building the Punch Hotel is an architectural gem.

Photos were taken and video footage. The location we investigated was a public house as shown above. This building was first built in 1896 but has been redeveloped on numerous occasions. The front of the building is in its original state. We all spent time in the establishment drinking soft drinks before we started. We were made very welcome by Joyce the owner who was looking forward to the investigation. She even brought along her own torch to use during her time with us on our quest to come up with something paranormal. This was the first time we had a complete team along with some extra’s who had been invited to join us as they were interested in what we could come up with.

Base lining

Jamie and Tony who came along to help with the investigation base lined the whole building. In the cellar a laptop was placed with a web cam running to capture video footage and an ipod was placed to capture audio. The edge of the bar was powdered to see if we could get any fingers prints being placed from the spirits. The three front doors were also powders at the bottom so we could note the draft coming in. A trigger object was placed in the smoking area of the bar with the security camera pointing to a table. On the table was placed a piece of plain white paper and some old Victorian coins. The coins were drawn around so that if they moved we would notice. All the doors and windows were checked in the whole building. Floors areas were checked for creaks and a self assessment was done for hazards.

 The vigils

Nicky, Claire, Jamie and Tony were taken by Joyce on a tour of the building before we started the vigils. As they came back to meet us all the lights were turned off. It all started with the whole group being taken to each room as we followed Joyce around the first and second floors. Nobody was aloud back in the bar till the end of the night as everyone had agreed the bar and the cellar would be locked off. After we went round as one big group we decided to do a vigil in two separate groups. One group went to the second floor while one group stayed on the first. There were certain areas that made us feel as though there was presence.

The protection

We all stood in a circle and whilst holding hands we spoke the protection prayer. While this was happening Joyce felt her left side go cold. She had been complaining of a painful arm and shoulder during the day. Many of the team members came up with similar feelings throughout the night.

The equipment

During the vigil we went onto the top floor and at the top of the staircase we stopped for a bit to see if we could get some comunication. The camcorder was playing and then suddenly stopped. It took a while to try and get it going and we ended up giving in. When we moved to a new area we tried the camcorder again and it worked. One of the walkie talkie was accidentally left in the cellar and we had three others. There is an emergency call button were you can call a particular set walkie talkie and they kept going off on their own. We watched the video and listened to audio which was left in the cellar and you do not hear a walkie talkie going off. The cellar was a locked off area and nobody could go down there.

Senses

There were many different senses of smell by various members of the team. At some point one member said they could smell bacon in the office. Members felt their hands and nose feeling very cold. Jo felt a very cold feeling as she walked through a door and once in the room it went away. Jo sensed the Month of March. There is no significance for this as yet. In the toilets Jamie sensed a dog barking and later we found out that there used to be a spirit dog that sat on the staircase. There were two groups, one did a vigil of the first floor and the other did a vigil of the second floor. When we all met up together afterwards we compared notes. The notes were similar which was exciting. We all seemed to come up with the same areas that felt a presence. Footsteps were heard above the bathroom on the first floor. On the first entering the bathroom Jo felt a cold breeze pass her face and Nicky saw an orb pass her on the video at the same time. A bedroom door opened and closed. While in the kitchen Jo sensed a bolt lock on a door and had the feeling of being locked in. Jo had not previously been on the tour of the building and each room was new to her and when we entered the next room there was a bolt lock on the door. In this room also Jamie and Nikki kept feeling the need to stand in a rocking motion and just before we left the room Jo also noticed Joyce rocking too. When we joined group 2 they had the same experience were Jamie and Claire felt the need to stand in a rocking motion.

The trigger objects

We used some old coins on white paper and also a victorian coin. We drew round the coins and left them on tables in the bar. When we went back it look like they had very gradually all moved in the same direction but, this was very minimal. The bar was powdered to see if we could get any fingerprints. We did get a true hand print but unluckily this was the landlord's handprint. An ipod was placed in the celler which came up with a 3 hour long audio file. We have listened to it and have got some sounds. One of the sounds is just like a cork being popped from a bottle. At the beginning of the sounds you can hear everyone before they move onto the above floors and then they cannot be heard at all.

Seance

At the end of the vigils we all vacated to the bar downstairs. We collected in all our equipment and the triggers were recorded. Photo's were taken and video footage was recorded as we held a seance. We had decided before the investigation that four of us would participate in glass tipping. We got a wine glass and a clean table. Jo, Nicky, Claire and Daniel took part in the glass tipping. At first we all placed our fingers on top of the glass and Jo spoke out to see if there was a presence. We suddenly heard a loud shuffling noise nearby and it sounded like a bird in a box. We asked if it was a spirit making the noise and if it was can they come over to us and move the glass. The noise stopped and to everyones surprise the glass started to move. You can see the video footage of this by clicked the link at the side and you can also see the pictures on the photo 2 page.

The Punch Hotel and the occupants were very interested and impressed with the happenings that went on during the vigils and this has led to the Ghostlygoingson team doing an investigation on a monthly basis. It will be very interesting to see what sort of patterns we can come up with.
